Proper Installation Matters

Using your Alternative Manhole Platform System is a walk in the park but making sure it is installed properly is far from it. Once it is installed you are sure to see your construction process revolutionised in no time at all, so what are you waiting for?

The team here at JL Benching Ltd have been developing the Alternative Manhole Platform System (AMPS) for many years now and have put together a fully functioning pre-fabricated manhole system that is retrofitted to any manhole.

Useful Purposes

AMPS can be used for numerous purposes but they are mainly fitted in manholes just above the soffit of the pipe for easy access into a piping system. As they are added at a later date and bespoke for your piping system, it removes the need for a concrete working platform that brings with it various health and safety issues. Used in both non-man and manned access procedures, the platforms add additional safety features and make it easier for normal duties to be carried out.

Step by Step Installation

Follow this step by step guide on how your AMPS will be installed safely and effectively.

The position of the platform and the number of brackets needed depends on the manhole diameter and inspection chamber.
We go by the rule of 6 brackets for 1200 to 2400 diameter rings and 8 brackets for 2700 to 3600 diameter rings. Once the main beam is installed the supportive brackets are fixed to the outer frame at the recommended heights. These heights are 30mm or higher for 1200 to 1800 and 80mm or higher for 2100 to 3600 diameter rings and are always fitted above the main beam supports.
All of the brackets are fixed with S316 anchor bolts. These are supplied by our team and are fixed accurately with your platform.
The next step is to locate the main beam in regards to the lower main beams brackets.
Place the lower beams into position.
Add bolts provided into the outer beams and attach to the main beam.
The next process is to install the quadrant sections and retain this in place with the top clips supplied. This is carried out using the appropriate Allen keys.
Next we attach the lifting chain and shackle this to the pre-drilled location on the hatch. The chain needs to allow for depth of chamber plus an additional 1.5 metres to get the correct length.
The next step is to install the lifting chain hook at approximately 1.5m above the platform.
Make sure that hook is at a 90-degree angle to the main beam for extra support and reliability.
Locate the lifting chain eyebolts onto each side of the ladder below the case of the manhole cover, no lower than 150mm.
